PERCEIVED ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT, STRESS COPING BEHAVIORS AND MEDIATING ROLE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL CAPITAL: SPECIAL EDUCATION AND REHABILITATION CENTERS

High level stress in work place is known to be associated with negative organizational behaviors and bad organizational performance. There are individual and organizational factors influencing stress coping behavior of employees. In this study we explore the impact of employees’ perceptions of organizational support on their stress coping capabilities (problem-focused stress coping and emotion-focused stress coping) and whether their psychological capital (PsyCap) plays a mediating role in this relationship using the sample of employees in special education and rehabilitation centers in Turkey. Multivariate statistical analyses show a significant positive relationship between perceived organizational support (POS) and problem-focused stress coping (PFSC), and no significant relationship between POS and emotion-focused stress coping (EFSC). A significant positive association is detected between POS and PsyCap. Accordingly, our findings show that PsyCap plays a partial mediating role in the association between POS and PFSC.JEL Codes - D22; M12; L

Job satisfaction and mental health of temporary agency workers in Europe: a systematic review and research agenda

    Get PDF
The current systematic literature review aimed to analyse the associations between temporary agency work (TAW), job satisfaction, and mental health in Europe, as well as to outline a future research agenda. Twenty-eight scientific articles were identified by searching different data bases (i.e. PSYNDEX, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Web of Science) for the time span from January 2000 to December 2016. Our review reveals first that TAW is not consistently negatively related to job satisfaction. However, job insecurity and working conditions are important mediators in the relation of TAW and lowered job satisfaction. Second, TAW is not consistently related to all investigated types of mental health impairments. However, when focusing on specific outcomes and comparing temporary agency workers to permanent employees, we still find consistent evidence regarding higher levels of depression and fatigue among temporary agency workers. Inconsistent associations between TAW, job satisfaction and mental health can partly be attributed to unfavourable methodological aspects of the included primary studies. To address these aspects, future research should consider applying a standard measurement of TAW, including a minimum of meaningful confounding variables, improving the operationalisation of outcome variables and the study design

    Navigation Devices for Mobile Phones

A mobile phone has several buttons/keys e.g. numerical keys, side keys, camera buttons and navigation keys. SEMC, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB, has mainly used the joystick and the rocker key as their navigation devices since they released their first phone in 2002. These technologies are used in all their phones except smart phones, e.g. W950 and P990. During the years SEMC has experienced some quality problems with their navigation devices, mainly with the joystick, because of the lack of ability to keep dust out. As the development of mobile phones progress, with more functions and larger quantity of data to go through, the need of a navigation device with more possibilities arise. The purpose of this master thesis was to perform a pre-study on the next generation navigation devices for mobile phones and based on that give recommendations to SEMC of which navigation devices suitable to be used in the future

Making Sure Pregnancy Works: Accommodation Claims After Young v. United Parcel Service, Inc.

The Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling in Young v. United Parcel Service, Inc. outlined a new analytical framework for Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) claims that challenge employers’ failure to “accommodate” pregnant workers. That framework was intended to lessen the evidentiary burden on plaintiff-employees in showing that others “similar in their ability or inability to work” were accommodated and to increase the burden on defendant-employers in justifying such differential treatment. In the five years since Young, however, lower courts have been inconsistent in their application of this mandate. In this Article, we survey the precedent that set the stage for Young, the decision’s new approach to accommodation claims under the PDA, and the mixed precedent that has followed. We identify for practitioners the flawed reasoning in negative post- Young rulings and emphasize arguments that best fulfill the letter and spirit of Young’s expansive approach to the PDA

Learning Curve Characterization Within Complex Low-Rate Production Environments

Traditional and current learning curve approaches, methods, and theories were deficient when addressing complex low-rate production systems. The purpose of this research was to address this problem and develop a learning curve approach that characterizes learning in low-rate production environments such as naval ship construction. This research identified the principal aspects that influence learning within this environment and developed a learning characterization more reflective of this environment. There obviously exists a large body of knowledge covering learning. However, the research contained herein addresses learning as it relates to learning curves in low-rate production environments, such as naval shipbuilding. The various theories impacting learning curves has been explored in detailed as part of this research. Through the completed literature review, the researcher has confirmed that there is gap in the body of knowledge associated with learning curves specifically addressing the low-rate production of naval ships. The results of this research have addressed this gap in knowledge accordingly. The research completed has a significant impact not only on the body of knowledge involving learning curves, but also on the expectations associated with the design, production, test, and delivery of complex naval ships. In addition, the results of the research were also a concise assessment of learning curve theories, their applicability, and the fact that, until now, there has not been published research addressing learning curves associated with the low-rate production environments. The results of the completed research also identified the principal factors associated with learning curves in low-rate production environments. These principal aspects formed the basis of the development of a characterization of learning in low-rate production environments, which the researcher has developed the terminology of overall learning curve characterization (OLCC) defined by stability (S), procurement strategy (P), industrial and organizational culture (I), knowledge management (K), and demographic environment (E), which the researcher has also referred to this characterization as SPIKE. The results developed by this research was also generalizable to other low-rate production complex systems such as one-of-a-kind systems like the space program, oil well platforms, and other low production rate industries
